For all you hunters out there…it’s time for the hunt. Grab your shotties, strap on your boots and put on your camo. The chance to place that boss gobbler you’ve been aching to nab in your cross-hairs has come again. The hunt is on. Are you ready?

Like the old saying goes, the early hunter gets the bird…wait, that can’t be right. Sure, why not? However, it’s more than just about rising before the crack of dawn. It’s about preparation, safety and, sometimes, a little guidance along the way.

Preparation

The majority of hunting experiences comes down to preparation. Good hunters need to know the ins and outs of hunting, everything from their gun to their turkey calls. Preparation is key to a successful hunt. Believe it or not, has nothing to do with hunting and it starts with a checklist.

When it comes to a hunting checklist:

  • Be terse. The whole point of checklists is to be simple. You’re not writing a novel. It’s just a matter of documenting what you need.
  • Make sub points. Sub points are great for making notes about a particular item and action.
  • Create a system for “If…then” scenarios: If a certain action is required or an item is needed if something else happens, then make a note of it. For instance, if it rains, note “If rain” next to that item or action, then you’ll know to bring the item or perform the action if it rains.

Once you have your checklist, double check it and go through your equipment in advance, not the morning of.

Safety, Safety, Safety

Safety is first when hunting. I can’t say that enough. Pay attention to your situation because different rules apply to different situations. For instance, most hunters do not wear orange during turkey season.  Wearing orange is usually reserved for deer hunting only, as they are color blind to orange.   Just keep this in mind, especially if hunting on land other than your own.

This is important when hunting on unfamiliar territory, which is where hunting outfitters and guides come in to play. Hunting outfitters are professional and communicate well with their guides, so this shouldn’t be an issue. However, poaching is still a problem, so it’s best to keep your eyes peeled and ready for anything.

Communication is an important element of safety, particularly when hunting with other people. Map each other’s routes and mark hunting spots. Texting is great if you’re in your spot and need to communicate without making noise.

Need a Hand?

For those hunting on unfamiliar territory and looking to use a hunting outfitter or guide, check out ServiceNoodle’s Hunting Guides. Hunting on unfamiliar land can be tricky and overwhelming; not knowing the layout, the equipment necessary for that particular hunt, etc. Hunting outfitters are beneficial and sometimes crucial in these hunting situations. They know the layout of the land and they can provide you with important information vital for the hunt.
